Napoli would travel back to the San Siro Saturday night, as the would face AC Milan in Serie A play. Napoli, however, would be thrilled to receive two important players back from suspension in Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly, who played their last Serie A match in the San Siro.
Napoli would use the 4-4-2. In attack, it would look like a 2-4-4 with fullbacks pushing up from out wide. On defense, Ancelotti wanted to use a high press, as Milan tend to make mistakes when pressed up high.
The match would be a back and forth physical battle, Milan would go toe to toe. Napoli would be pressing for much of the first half getting Milan deep in their zone and forcing them to make mistakes, Milan would get some chances and played well in the first. In the second half Napoli took advantage of Milan going at them full force and had a lot of opportunities, but could not capitalize. The match would end in a 0-0 draw.
David Ospina- 7
The Colombian goalie has seemed to fall out of favor with Ancelotti, with the emergence of Alex Meret. Ancelotti decided to go with Ospina for this big match, and the decision paid off. He would get banged up a little after run into a Koulibaly slide tackle, after a short scare he would continue playing. Ospina played great and adds another clean sheet to the season.
Kevin Malcuit- 6.5
For Malcuit it’s now his third start in a row, he’s become a regular in Serie A fixtures. He would have a major factor on the defensive side as he made some crucial plays that secure a point for Napoli. He has to have finally solidified the right back spot.
Raul Albiol- 6
For Raul it wouldn’t be the best match for him, he would be caught out of position a couple times while making bad decisions. It’s a match he has to forget about as Napoli move on.
Kalidou Koulibaly- 7
It would be Koulibaly’s first Serie A match back since the controversy against inter. He looked great as always, a force on the backline while also making some big plays to save his club.
Mario Rui- 5.5
For Mario Rui, his performance wouldn’t be the worse but he also wasn’t a major factor in the match. He would option out wide and would switch spots with Zielinski when attacking. In 72nd he would be subbed out for Faouzi Ghoulam, which he made evident he was no fan of.
Jose Callejon- 6
Fresh off of a match in which Callejón got his first goal of the season, Jose would play with a different sense of confidence. He played well in this match as he did what he had to do, he had a couple opportunities in this match but could not get one though.
Fabian Ruiz- 6
Fabian would be in the same role he’s been playing the past couple matches as the main attacking midfielder. He wouldn’t have his best match as he had a couple of turnovers as well as being sent off with a red card in stoppage time which was controversial.
Piotr Zielinski- 6
The Polish midfielder had his best match the season in his first match against Milan, this match he would play well, as he had a couple of opportunities to get Napoli on the board, but as always he was a force on the defensive side. He slid back to fullback when Mario Rui had to make a run out wide.
Lorenzo Insigne- 6
It would be Lorenzo’s first match in Serie A back since the incident against inter. He would play in a more wide role, as Ancelotti try to implement his three-headed attacking monster out on the pitch. Insigne does not fit playing out wide in this system, he’s played better playing closer to the center instead. Milan’s Calabria also did a good job keeping up with Insigne
Arkadiusz Milik- 6
Milik had a string of great matches, against Milan he would cool off. Musacchio and Romagnoli did a good job of not giving him any space, he would have a difficult job of creating any chances.
Dries Mertens- 5.5
Mertens would be quiet in this match, could possibly be because he may have been hurt. There has not been any official word yet but he was shaking up in the second minute with an apparent foot injury. He wouldn’t be much of a factor in the match and would be subbed out in the 80th minute.
Faouzi Ghoulam- 5.5
Ghoulam would come in the 72nd minute for Mario Rui, as Ancelotti is still monitoring his minutes. He would help the attack but couldn’t do anything to help get a goal. Overall solid 20 minutes by Ghoulam.
Simone Verdi- 5.5
Verdi would come in the 80th minute for a fatigued Dries Mertens, he would switch spots with Insigne, playing him out wide which he’s more comfortable in playing. He is questionable to play the midseason Coppa Italia match. He played well in his short time in the match.
Adam Ounas- 5
Ounas came in at the right time as Ancelotti knew Insigne had to come out. Ounas would only get to play a couple of minutes and would get to do much.
For Napoli the draw is not what they wanted, with Juve continuing to win, it sets Napoli farther back in the Scudetto race. Milan played well, it seemed with the departure of Higuaín and the arrival of Piątek Milan seem rejuvenated. Napoli will get another opportunity at Milan, as they have to travel mid-week for Coppa Italia quarter-finals back at the San Siro, and then finish the week with Serie A play to host
