If I were to ask you who’s the leading goal scorer in Europe currently, you would probably answer by saying Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, or maybe even M’bappe, but it’s none of the above. His name is Krzysztof Piątek, a 23-year-old Polish international who currently plays for Genoa CFC in the Serie A. Through two months of European play, Piątek has 12 goals through all competitions.
But who is Krzysztof Piątek? Not Many people know who is due to the fact he plays for a mid-table club in Genoa as well as coming from a nation like Poland, where he’s is overshadowed by the players they have.
Piątek started his career in his homeland of Poland, his early years saw him play at Lechia Dzierżoniów. He would move on and start his senior career with Zagłębie Lubin, where he made his debut at the age of 19, he gave the club 72 appearances with 15 goals
In 2016 he was sold to another Polish club, Cracovia, This is where he started to blossom. He only gave them 63 appearances notching 32 goals, including an impressive last season, where he put in 21 goals in a punishing Polish league. Not bad for a 22-year-old player.
With his performance in this last season, he caught the eye of Italy. Genoa CFC president Enrico Preziosi caught a glimpse of Piątek and in Jerry West fashion decided he needed him to buy him. So on June 8th, 2018 Piątek signed his biggest contract yet, signing with Genoa. Preziosi only paid a boggling 4 million dollar transfer fee, in my books that’s a bargain. So what does he do with his chance in big-time soccer? Only start his first season with 12 goals in only two months.
This is astonishing due to the fact unlike those major stars I mentioned earlier, he plays for a club that is not at the stature of Juve, Barca, Real, Man City, etc. He doesn’t have the team, support staff, or facilities the other players do. Genoa also doesn’t compete in europenan competitions, so he has less opportunities to score. Heck Genoa hasn’t even been a good team since the 20’s.
With his play so far people have been comparing him to his fellow countrymen Robert Lewandowski for their similar style of play. Piątek has been rumored to be wanted by some of the big clubs in Europe from Juventus, Chelsea, Liverpool, Atlético Madrid and the list has just begun. Genoa President Preziosi has already said he expects a huge pay day when he sells Piątek.
Piątek is ready for the big stage, and there is no doubt he will succeed. It’s time for people to recognize who is. So when you hear about the record transfer fees this summer don’t be surprised to see his name.
