David Luiz or Andreas Christensen?

Who is the Right Centre-back to Compliment Rüdiger in Sarri’s Back 4?

David Luiz and Andreas Christensen, two completely different types of center-backs. David Luiz who is more experienced than Andreas Christensen being 9 years older. And Andreas Christensen who is less experienced than David Luiz but has huge potential. These two defenders have been hotly debated by Chelsea fans in recent weeks as to whom should pair up with Rüdiger in Sarri’s back 4 for Chelsea this season. These two defenders have split fans, with some opting to prefer Luiz with Rüdiger, whereas some Chelsea fans would like to see Christensen paired up with Rüdiger.

H1: The case for David Luiz being the right centre-back to complement Rüdiger

At this moment in time, David Luiz is winning the debate, and this is shown by Sarri selecting him with Rüdiger for the first 4 premier league games, with Christensen remaining on the bench. But Christensen will get his chance to impress Sarri and Chelsea fans when Chelsea play their English cup games (Carabao and FA Cup) and when they open their Europa League campaign where Christensen is guaranteed playing time.

Sarri is an attacking manager who usually opts for experience and this may explain why at the start of the season Sarri has opted for Luiz over Christensen to partner Rüdiger. His preference for experience was shown in his Napoli days where Albiol who is experienced partnered Koulibaly in Napoli’s back 4 under Sarri. Another reason why Sarri may opt for Luiz over Christensen is that statistics show that Luiz starts a lot of Chelsea’s attacks from the back and his goalscoring presence adds goals in Sarri’s team. Since Luiz joined Chelsea in his first spell up till now, he has scored 8 goals, whereas Christensen up till now has scored 0 goals for Chelsea.

H2: The Case for Christensen and the case against David Luiz for complementing Rüdiger in Sarri’s back four

On the other hand, some Chelsea fans may opt for Christensen over Luiz due to the fact that David Luiz has arguably looked to be the weak link in this Chelsea Fc team up until now. This has been shown in Chelsea’s first 4 games where David Luiz was arguably at fault for Joselu’s goal in Chelsea’s narrow 1-2 win over Newcastle at St James Park, but he was bailed out as Alonso rescued Chelsea by assisting Yedlin’s own goal. Also, against Bournemouth Luiz was also at fault for letting Wilson and Ake have guilt edge opportunities which on another day could have cost Chelsea points if they would have put those chances away.

H3: The reasons that some Chelsea fans think that Luiz should retain  his place over Christensen in Sarri’s back 4

However, some fans may argue that Luiz should retain his place over Christensen due to the fact that Christensen last season started well, but his inexperience showed in important games against Barcelona where he gave the ball away to Iniesta which led to Messi scoring a crucial away goal in the Champions League tie last season. Also, he was at fault for not picking up Lingard in the penalty area in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea last season at Old Trafford.

So, the Question remains, who is the better Centre-back between Luiz or Christensen to partner Rüdiger in Sarri’s back 4? At this current moment, Sarri has opted for Luiz, but this could all change during the season…
