The UEFA Champions League continued on Wednesday with Tottenham Hotspurs hosting Borussia Dortmund and Ajax against the defending champions Real Madrid. Spurs had the time of their life at Wembley when they won 3-0. Also, Real Madrid put themselves in a slight advantage against Ajax in which they won 2-1.
Here are some statistics you might have missed:
- Jan only scores and assist against Dortmund
Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen clearly was high flying against German giants Dortmund. The Belgian scored and assisted one goal each. However, Vertonghen completed 4 take-ons more than any player on the pitch. In his entire career in the Champions League for Spurs, the 31-year-old has only scored or made an assist against Borussia Dortmund.
- 30 Shots, One goal
Since the beginning of this Champions League season, no player took more shots at goal than Hakim Ziyech. Before Ajax played Real Madrid, the Moroccan took 28 shots at goal but did not score. However, when Ziyech took his 30th shot, he finally scored to equalize but Asensio scored late to gift Real the lead. Against Real Madrid, the 25-year-old took 5 shots on goal, two more than any other player on the pitch.
- Mission complete
Since his Champions League debut, Marco Asensio has been one of the greatest super subs in the competition. The Spanish winger scored his first UCL goal of the season against Dutch side Ajax. This goal means the 2-time UEFA Champions League winner has now scored in every round of the Champions League.
- Llorente taking good use of an opportunity
Since Harry Kane horrific injury, Pochettino placed his trust in Fernando Llorente to fill the gap. The 33-year-old game time at the London club has been very limited since he joined. However, recently the Spanish striker is taking advantage of the opportunity of his increase in game time. The striker scored in the knockout stages for the first time in his career against Dortmund. He could play a major role in guiding Spurs to quarterfinals for the first time in the clubs history.
