Napoli Draw PSG In A Instant Classic

You know what they say, a draw is like kissing your sister, I’ll tell you what this felt worse. Wednesday night Napoli continued Champions League against powerhouse PSG. A match in which Napoli actually looked like the better team, it only ended in a draw with a 93rd-minute beautiful goal by Angel Di Maria, ending the match 2-2. Still a point but for Napoli, it should have been three. Time to break down this match.

PSG has probably one of the world’s scariest attacks up top, with Neymar-Cavani-M’Bappe attacking at will. Ancelotti would need to continue bringing his Champions League magic, and that he did. Napoli lined up in the usual 4-4-2.

In net we got David Ospina, with over a week of rest, David was ready. He had a good match, playing alert and wise against this world-class lineup. Both goals allowed were not his fault.

The back line consisted of Rui-Koulibaly-Albiol-Maksimovic. They played well for the most part with the daunting test they faced. One player we must touch upon is Mario Rui, who had the worst performance of the team. Always a quality attacking fullback but defensively it was poor, to say the least. He committed an own goal as well as being the player who was supposed to cover Angel Di Maria in the glorious 93rd-minute goal. Koulibaly showcased his world-class talent as Maksimovic and Albiol Both had solid performances.

In Midfield we got Fabian-Hamsik-Allan-Callejon. This bunch played great, creating chances all night. Hamsik has truly settled in his Regista role. Allan showcased his argument as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, winning balls back for the Ciucciarelli’s. Callejón had a beautiful assist in the first half. Fabian Ruiz had another great match, becoming The Champions League option for Ancelotti.

Up top Ancelotti went with the mighty mouse’s Insigne-Mertens. Both players played spectacular, taking their shots on goal. Insigne started the scoring in the 29th minute, flipping in a goal over the head of PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Mertens regained the lead after a 1-1 score by knocking in a goal off a Marquinhos deflection. Milik came on in the 84th minute. Insigne came off early in the 53rd minute looking to be in pain, he confirmed he was having issues breathing and should be ready for the match on Sunday.

This draw will sting for a little bit, as a win was in their hands. PSG has the better squad, and they chased Napoli all match. This match should motivate the squad as the next stretch of matches should be some wins for Napoli, with the next Champions league being back home at the San Paolo with this same PSG squad. Now the focus is back on Serie A as an important derby match against Roma is upon us.
