Sarri: “I Am Not Able to Give Him (Morata) Confidence”

It was another night to forget for Alvaro Morata as the goal drought continues.

Chelsea started their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win over PAOK thanks to a goal from Willian. However, the truth is, the Blues should have buried the game in the 1st half had Morata scored.

The Spaniard began his career at Stamford Bridge by scoring 7 goals in 8 games last season. However, he has been short of confidence for a long time now.

Sarri has revealed that he does not know how to give the Chelsea striker confidence but is impressed by his improvement.

” Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two, three goals.

“I am not able to give him confidence. In this match (PAOK vs Chelsea), he has had three, four opportunities. He was unlucky.

“I hope for him that in the future I can try to help him, but the confidence can become only with goals.

“I have to say also, for maybe the first time in this season Alvaro was ready in the box. He was on the ball and was active.” – Sarri

Morata had 7 opportunities in the first half – and they were all good enough to be converted into a goal. But for Morata, he had 0 shots on target. Not one shot troubled the keeper.

Come the 2nd half, it was clear that he had lost confidence and he had little effort. He was not finding spaces, he was not active, he was a different person altogether.

Sarri was happy with the three points but was not pleased with the game overall and the missed chances.

“We have had a lot of opportunities. We missed several,” Sarri said.

“So I am really very happy with the three points, very happy with the performance, but I am not very happy with the result.

When it is time to kill the match we have to kill the match.”

Chelsea could have comfortably put the game to bed in the 1st half with the number of chances they had. They would consider themselves lucky PAOK was not able to level the score.

Had that happened, the players had only themselves to blame. The home side did try to threaten in the last 10 minutes of the game but were not good enough to put the ball in the back of the net.

The game went on smoothly until the very end when Pedro suffered a shoulder injury at stoppage-time. This could potentially rule him out for the match against West Ham.

Sarri said, ” I don’t know exactly the situation. I have spoken with the doctor, but only for a few seconds. The doctor told me that probably it’s not a very serious injury.”

Pedro took to Twitter to clear the air regarding his situation. However, further tests are expected and only then will we have a full picture.
