Where Does Chelsea Need Strengthening in the Upcoming Transfer Windows?

Chelsea Banner

After Chelsea’s battering at the weekend in the London Derby by Tottenham, the game has highlighted areas where Chelsea need to strengthen in the upcoming transfer windows. In this article, I will explore these areas in depth and highlight possible players that Sarri could target to improve these areas.

Obviously, all these areas can’t be addressed in the January transfer window, so these suggestions that I will make will be for the next 2 upcoming transfer windows for Chelsea, granted they don’t receive this transfer ban that has been touted around in the media recently for signing too many underage players.

Where Does Chelsea Need Strengthening in the Upcoming Transfer Windows?

  1. Fullbacks- This has probably been one of the major weaknesses in Chelsea’s team this season. Alonso is good attacking but is suspect in the defensive phase. Many teams target his side and he has been at fault for many goals this season, including both goals in the Manchester United game where Chelsea ended up drawing 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. On the other side at the right back position, Sarri has been using Azpilicueta. In the last two seasons under Conte, the Spaniard was excellent as a center-back in Conte’s back 3. However Sarri is using the 29-year-old in the right back position, and so far this season he is struggling to adapt. In short, he doesn’t have the legs anymore to play as the right back in Sarri’s back 4.

Suggested signings for the fullback positions

Left-back- Alex Sandro from Juventus- been targeted by Chelsea in previous transfer windows. Was wanted under Conte, and arguably one of the best left-backs in the world at this moment behind Marcelo. He would be excellent in Sarri’s system.

Cheaper alternative- Alex Telles from Porto- targeted by Chelsea in the last transfer window under Conte.

Right back- Elseid Hysaj from Napoli- has played under Sarri at Napoli and know’s Sarri’s system very well. Reports are going around that he will be targeted in the upcoming windows by Chelsea, so this could be a realistic signing for Chelsea. However Chelsea doesn’t have a great relationship with Aurelio De Laurentiis, so this signing would be a hard one to get done considering Chelsea’s transfer pact that was made with ADL in the Summer transfer window after the signings of Sarri and Jorginho.

Cheaper alternative- Benjamin Henrichs from Bayer Leverkusen- brief transfer links from Chelsea in the last transfer window but nothing materialized.

2. Wingers- With Hazard maybe looking to leave in the summer, and Willian and Pedro looking like being past their best now at Chelsea, the wide positions will be key areas where Sarri will need to strengthen in the upcoming transfer windows.

Suggested signings for the wide positions

Left Wing- Leon Bailey- Lifelong Chelsea fan and has been linked to Chelsea in previous windows. Has been touted as Eden Hazard’s replacement if he leaves.

Right Wing- Christian Pulisic- recent reports from the Daily Mail in England have suggested that Chelsea are in pole position to secure the signing of the young American in January.

A cheaper alternative to Pulisic- Suso from AC Milan. Reports from Italy have suggested that Chelsea has started initial talks with Suso’s representatives .

3.  Strikers- Neither Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud are good enough to be Sarri’s main striker. They are both good bench options in my opinion and in many Chelsea fans opinions. Neither of them is that 30+ goal striker that Sarri needs in his team. This is probably the most important areas that Sarri needs to strengthen

Suggested Signings for the Striker position

Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan- Would be the best person in my opinion for that Forward position. Guaranteed clinical and ruthless goalscorer.

Cheaper alternatives to Icardi- Krzysztof Piątek from Genoa

Lorenzo Insigne from Napoli

Anthony Martial from Manchester United- going into the last year of his United contract and there reports from the summer transfer window that Chelsea was really keen to secure the services of the Frenchman.

3. Centre-back– David Luiz even though I like him as a player isn’t consistent enough to be a center-back in Sarri’s back 4. He made a catalog of errors for Tottenham’s goals at the weekend, and you can argue that he was at fault for the vast majority of Spurs’ goals at the weekend. Although he has had some brilliant games this season, e.g. in the Liverpool game where he was the man of the match. But, unfortunately even though I rate him as a player, he is coming to the end of his Chelsea career, and now Sarri needs to look and find a new center-back to partner Rüdiger.

However, some Chelsea fans will argue that they don’t need another centre-back as they have Christensen and upcoming talents like Ampadu. However, Christensen has looked dodgy so far this season when give the chances, especially against Derby in the Carabao Cup. And Ampadu is one for the future and is not currently ready to be part of Sarri’s immediate plans.

Also, Chelsea fans have to factor in that Gary Cahill is likely to leave in the January transfer window, so they will have to replace him.

Suggested signings for the centre-back position

Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan- Touted as the next Nemanja Vidic. Recent reports have come out from Italy that Chelsea are readying an 80 million Euro bid for the Slovakian, and that is likely to be enough to price him away from Inter Milan (Source- TuttoSport)

Alessio Romagnoli from AC Milan- has been linked with Chelsea. Seen as a cheaper alternative to Kalidou Koulibaly.

Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli- Probably the most unlikely to happen considering that he has recently signed a new contract with Napoli. But Sarri rated him very highly when he was at Napoli. There are complications due to the transfer pact that Chelsea and Napoli reportedly agreed in the Summer.

One thing is for certain if Chelsea does sign a centre-back, it does look like it will be someone from Serie A, as that’s the league that  Sarri knows very well. They have only been linked with centre-backs from that league.
