Real Madrid’s new coach, Julen Lopetegui is having a tough decision starting the season: who should be the starter in the goalkeeping area?
This reminds me a few years ago when Real Madrid had the same issue with Diego Lopez and Iker Casillas, however, in my opinion, this season abilities are more similar.
Keylor Navas came into the club from Levante after an amazing World Cup where he took his team to the quarterfinals. Only costing the team 10 million euros, he only had 6 appearances on his first season but right after Casillas departure, his career changed tremendously. He helped ‘Los Blancos” win 3 consecutive Champions League, with amazing performances. Navas received a lot of pressure outside of the club even at a point that people think it happens because he is from Costa Rica. The press is always critiquing him even when he has done so much for the team.
On the other side of the ring, we have, Thibaut Courtois. He recently joined the team after the club paid 35 million euros making him the most expensive La Liga goalkeeper. Courtois, similarly, came into the team after an amazing World Cup in Russia taking his team all the way to the semifinals and winning 3rd place in the competition. Last season he won the FA cup under Conte and the year before that he won the Premier League.
Navas has speed and feline reflexes. The way he comes out of his zone, rushing out of the net, makes him one of the best. He is humble and is loved in one of the most complicated dressing rooms in the history of soccer. Courtois can reach the impossible. He can get to places most goalkeepers can’t. Even more, he excels in the air and is very dominant in that area. He is a leader at such a young age (26) and has a lot of experience in European competitions.
They’re both international with their teams. Keylor has 83 appearances with Costa Rica and Courtois has 66 appearances.
Based on some reports, Courtois is going to start again in La Liga this weekend against Athletic de Bilbao. If that happens it seems that Keylor will be the starter in the Champions League and in the Copa del Rey.
Finally, I take the time to ask you, who do you think should be the starter of Real Madrid?
